Crab and Lobster Fisheries Management Plan Consultation: SAGB’s Response

SAGB, with input from members, has responded to Defra’s consultation on the Crab and Lobster Fisheries Management Plan (FMP). Amidst a series of Fisheries Reform Consultations, the Crustacean sector faced numerous challenges, including the development of FMPs, implementation of welfare codes, and regulatory changes such as fishermen’s medicals.

The release of consultations on the first six FMPs, alongside other reforms, heightened frustration within the industry. Simultaneously, consultations on regional byelaws highlighted a disjointed approach across Defra bodies. SAGB acknowledges efforts to address crab and lobster management needs but expresses concerns about scientific capacity.

SAGB calls for a detailed delivery plan, prioritization within the crab and lobster FMP, and allocation of resources across all FMPs. Sustained stakeholder engagement is urged throughout the publication, implementation, and review stages to maintain the collaborative approach and move towards co-management models.
