Join the Conversation: Shaping the Future of Welsh Crab and Lobster Fisheries
The Welsh Government is gearing up to publish its Fishery Management Plan (FMP) in 2026, aimed at ensuring sustainable practices in the Welsh crab and lobster fisheries. But before the ink dries on this pivotal document, Seafish is embarking on a crucial pre-consultation project to gather insights from key stakeholders and fishers.
Stakeholders from across the spectrum, including commercial and recreational fishers, seafood processors, wholesalers, retailers, NGOs, and scientists, are invited to share their thoughts on the current state and future direction of these fisheries. With species like brown crab, European lobster, velvet crab, spider crab, crawfish, and common prawn under consideration, the scope is comprehensive.
The goal? To assess the efficacy of existing management approaches, identify challenges, and uncover aspirations for the future. This input will directly shape the development of the FMP, ensuring it reflects the needs and concerns of those most intimately involved in the industry.
To facilitate this exchange, both in-person and online engagement events are being held across Wales. While many sessions have already taken place in April, there’s still an opportunity to participate. A final online meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30th, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Simply reach out to holly.kaiser@Seafish.co.uk for the meeting link.
