APPG News

Our Cheif Executive, David Jarrad, recently took part in the ASSG conference in Oban, serving as a judge for the Best Scottish Shellfish competition and delivering a keynote address. They highlighted the pivotal role of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Shellfish Aquaculture in advocating for the industry’s concerns.

Led by Anthony Mangnall MP and Simon Fell MP, the APPG includes representatives from Scotland, England, Wales, and the House of Lords, with SAGB providing secretarial support. Its primary goal is to educate policymakers about shellfish farming and advocate for fair treatment in regulations, especially post-Brexit.

David stressed the urgent need for increased parliamentary engagement to address legislative hurdles such as bureaucratic red tape. They also outlined ongoing APPG initiatives, including discussions on gigas oyster utilization, water quality, and reinstating EU trade in certain shellfish categories.

However, recent regulations limiting MPs’ involvement in APPGs highlight the need for more members to ensure the group’s effectiveness. Local stakeholders are urged to mobilize and encourage their MPs to join the APPG, amplifying the industry’s voice in policymaking.

Your participation in APPG meetings is crucial to shaping the group’s agenda and advocating for the sector’s interests. Get involved today to help secure a thriving future for shellfish aquaculture in the UK.
