Export of Live Crabs, UK to China

Lobbying Efforts for UK Crab Exports: SAGB’s Advocacy

SAGB continues its advocacy efforts with Defra’s markets access team and the British Embassy in Beijing regarding the UK’s challenges in accessing the live crab market in China due to stringent requirements. Currently, the UK must comply with rigorous testing protocols, including 100% consignment testing and positive release criteria, which puts it at a disadvantage compared to other European countries facing less stringent regulations.

Recent diplomatic engagements, including a visit by Foreign Secretary David Cameron to China before Christmas, and a subsequent visit by the Chief Veterinary Officer to Beijing in late January, aimed to address these issues with Chinese authorities (GACC). As of the newsletter’s publication, updates on the outcome of these discussions were pending.

SAGB remains committed to keeping stakeholders informed as developments unfold regarding UK crab exports to China. Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to monitor the situation.
