Advancements in Offshore Mussel Farming: Ropes to Reefs Meeting Highlights
David Jarrad participated in the recent Ropes to Reefs Partner Meeting, which includes collaborators such as the University of Plymouth, Offshore Shellfish, Biome Algae, Scallop Ranch, SAGB, and The Fishmonger’s Company. The project aims to evaluate the benefits of offshore mussel farming, including ecosystem services and fish habitat restoration, with surveys delayed by winter storms but set to commence in mid-February. Despite challenges, interesting data has emerged, such as black bream traveling over 200 miles from mussel farms to Plymouth.
Presentations at workshops and conferences have garnered attention, with plans to present findings at the Aquaculture Advisory Council and the upcoming SAGB conference in May. Stay tuned for further updates on this promising initiative.
